Cooling
Most server class systems have plenty of cooling fans, however some desktop computers do not have adequate cooling and the extra heat can cause some of the cameras to black out. If your system will not be in an air-conditioned room, make sure there is adequate cooling.
Operating System
Performance across all of Microsoft's operating systems has been tested to be similar, but we recommend using Windows XP Professional for its native support of larger disk drives. The Server is compatible with the following operating systems:
- Windows 2000 Professional or Windows 2000 Server
- Windows XP Professional (XP Home can also be used if you do not need the Web Client for remote access)
- Windows 2003 Server - Recommended if you plan on having more than 10 remote users
- Note: At this time, we only support 32 bit Windows Installs
Additional Software/ Hardware Required
- Windows IIS - IIS is required for the Web server software. Without IIS, there will be no availability for web access
- Microsoft DirectX. Direct X 9.0c is a requirement for the Video Server
Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS)
The Server uses IIS to provide remote access to your system. Confirm that Microsoft's Internet Information Server has been installed. You can do this by opening the control panel and double-click "Add or Remove Programs". Now click the "Add/Remove Windows Components" on the left side of the application. If Internet Information Server is checked you can proceed, if not please insert your Windows CD and check the box to install. Click Next and the IIS services will install. Click Finish when the install is complete.
Preloaded Systems
Computers purchased preloaded with Windows XP usually have a dozen or more unnecessary applications loaded on the system. In addition to using disk space and taking up system resources, these preloaded applications occasionally prevent Video Insight from loading properly. We recommend formatting the system prior to loading Video Insight using the manufacturer's setup disks. Usually they include two CD's – one with Windows XP and the other with all the included software applications.
Removing the Keyboard and Mouse
In some situations it might be helpful to remove the keyboard and mouse from the PC. If you do remove the keyboard, you might need to change the computers BIOS settings to ensure that the system boots correctly.
Auto Logon
If you are using a password on your Windows system, it might boot up to a Logon Screen. To change the Windows Logon to automatically logon:
For Windows 2000: From Control Panels/User Manager uncheck the box that says "Users must enter a user name".
For Windows XP: Run the command "control userpasswords2" and uncheck the box that says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" as shown on the right.
User Accounts
Video Insight is developed using Microsoft's.net application language. When you install .Net, it creates a user called "ASP.NET Machine Account". DO NOT DELETE this user. It is required for web access.
Internet Connection
To use the Web Client, the system will need an Internet Connection. We recommend a broadband connection like DSL or Cable for best performance.
To access the site outside your office, your system will need an IP address. These addresses are available from your broadband provider in two types Static/Fixed or Dynamic IP Address. We recommend a Static IP address to ensure constant availability, however if your provider only offers Dynamic addresses we recommend using software tools like www.winip.com to keep track of your address. Please give us a call for more information on Dynamic IP addresses.
Web Security (Optional)
By default, Windows does not require a password to gain access to the Video Insight Web Client. We recommend turning off "Anonymous Access" by using the following steps:
- Go to the Control Panel
- Choose Administrative Tools
- Choose Internet Information Services
- You will see a collapsed tree. Expand this tre3
- Right mouse click on the "Default Web Site"
- You will see the "Default Web Site Properties" dialogue box. Choose the "Directory Security" tab
- Click "Anonymous access and authentication control"- the dialogue box to the right will be displayed
- Uncheck the "Anonymous Access" box
- Uncheck "Basic authentication"
- Check "Integrated Windows authentication"
- Click "OK"
Windows is now configured to prompt you for a user name and password when accessing the PC from the web. You will be asked to supply the:
- Username: [this is a username that has access to Windows]
- Password: [the associated password]
- Domain: [the domain this computer is a member of]
Router and Firewall Issues
We recommend using some type of router if your computer is connected to the Internet. Routers from manufacturers like Linksys, provide a simple firewall that protects your server. They connect to your DSL or cable modems and then connect your Video Insight server to them. The Router closes all inbound traffic except the traffic that you specifically allow through. Your router will need to be configured to allow the following ports to pass through to the Video Insight Server:
To use the Web Client from outside your office on the Internet: Port 80
Note: Some ISP's will block port 80 to prevent you from hosting web sites. You can use the router to redirect the external port to the Video Insight Server. Consult your router manual for additional details.
To use the Network Client from outside your office on the Internet:
- Port 4000
- Port 1433
- Port 11111
- Port 25
- Port 11000 (for streaming)
To use the Web Client on the Internet:
- Port 4000 (for active X)
Typical steps to configure your router for Video Insight include:
- Configure your router with the Static IP address that your ISP assigned (ex. 65.112.123.34 – this is the external address), including the default gateway and DNS servers.
- Routers typically use 192.168.1.x for the internal addresses. Assign a static IP address of 192.168.1.100 to your Video Insight Server.
- Configure your router to pass port 80 traffic to IP address 192.168.1.100.
- Look for directions on how to configure the router if you have your own web server. This includes setting up port forwarding. Linksys setup has a tab called Applications and Games. (Access the setup by typing the router's IP address in a web browser; typically it is 192.168.1.1 with a default username of "admin" and password "admin.")
- Save the settings and restart the router
When you try and access Video Insight from outside your firewall, open up Internet Explorer and type http://65.112.123.34/videoinsight in the address line. This will open up a communication session with the router. The router will identify that you are asking for port 80 traffic and then direct this traffic to the Video Insight server.
Call your router manufacture for help since they know their own products. Linksys support number is (800) 326-7114. We are happy to help, but due to the large number of router configurations, many times we are not as fast as the manufacturer.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Firewall
The Windows XP Firewall that is included in Service Pack 2 provides intrusion protection to your system. If you plan on allowing remote access to your system, you need to open up the ports mentioned above, in the "Exceptions" tab of the firewall setup. You can access this page:
- From Control Panel, open "Network Connections"
- Click Properties
- On the Properties tab, click "Advanced"
- Under the Windows Firewall heading, click "Settings"
- Finally you will see the "Exceptions" menu that is shown to the right.
- Click "Add Port"
- Name the first entry "Video Insight NC" and assign port 4000 and TCP
- Repeat step 7 until all ports required have been opened.
