Video Insight Support | Web Client FAQ's
The Video Insight Web Server is installed during the Video Servers' installation and uses the Windows XP component Internet Information Services (IIS) to serve video to remote clients. By utilizing IIS, the user can view live or recorded video using the Web Client without loading any additional software on the local PC. The following are the most common questions we receive concerning cameras. If you have any other issues, please contact technical support.

The Web Client is installed during the Video Server installation. You will be prompted with two menus asking for configuration settings, unless your network administrator tells you otherwise, use the default settings.
If you get a message that Microsoft Internet Information Services can not be found, use Control Panels Add/Remove Programs and select the "Add Windows Components" from the left side and install Internet Information Services. Next, using the Video Insight CD, browser the folder for Web Setup. Double-click on the Setup.exe. Reboot the system when complete.
How do I test the Web Client? On the Video Server, open a web browser and enter http://localhost/videoinsight in the address line. You should open the left navigation tree and be able to click on a link and view live video. If you only see "Red x's", you probably have the wrong IP address in the Tools/Server/Setup/General Tab. You can check your IP address by clicking on the button to the right of the IP address box. This will put the systems IP address in that box. Restart the Video Server and retry this test.
What if I don't have a static IP Address? You can use any Dynamic IP service, however we had successes with www.no-ip.com. This service automatically keeps track of any changes with your address and assigns you a URL address to access your system.
What is my IP address? To identify your external IP address, you can use our Find Your IP Address tool. To determine if your ports are open, you can use www.auditmypc.com.
How do I configure my router? We recommend using some type of router if your computer is connected to the Internet. Routers from manufactures like Linksys, provide a simple firewall that protects your server. They connect to your DSL or cable modems and then connect your Video Insight server to them. The Router closes all inbound traffic except the traffic that you specifically allow through. Your router will need to be configured to allow the following ports to pass through to the Video Insight Server:
Typical steps to configure your router for Video Insight include:
- Configure your router with the Static IP address that your ISP assigned (ex. 65.112.123.34 - this is the external address), including the default gateway and DNS servers.
- Routers typically use 192.168.1.x for the internal addresses. Assign a static IP address of 192.168.1.100 to your Video Insight Server.
- Configure your router to pass port 80 traffic to IP address 192.168.1.100.
- Look for directions on how to configure the router if you have your own web server. This includes setting up port forwarding. Linksys setup has a tab called Applications and Games. (you access the setup by typing the routers IP address in a web browser (typically its 192.168.1.1 with a default username of "admin" and password "admin")
- Save the settings and restart the router
- When you try and access video insight from outside your firewall, open up Internet Explorer and type http://65.112.123.34/videoinsight in the address line. This will open up a communication session with the router. The router will identify that you are asking for port 80 traffic and then direct this traffic to the Video Insight server.
- Call your router manufacture for help since they know their own products. Linksys support number is (800) 326-7114. We are happy to help, but due to the large number of routers configurations, many times we are not as fast as the manufacture.
You can limit user access by turning on the Viewer Security on the Server under Tools/Security/Setup "Enable Viewer Security". This will prompt the user to enter a username and password when accessing the website.
Can I customize the Web Client? The Video Insight Web Client does not require any software to be installed on the remote client because we use basic HTML to build the page. This allows you to customize the view to meet your specific needs. The following are a few examples:
To view a single stream use:
http://www.demovi.com/videoinsight/Pages/camera.aspx?serverid=1&cameranumber=8
To view a single image that is only refreshed when you refresh:
http://www.demovi.com/videoinsight/Pages/image.aspx?serverid=1&cameranumber=8
If you only see "Red x's", you probably have the wrong IP address in the Tools/Server/Setup/General Tab. You can check your IP address by clicking on the button to the right of the IP address box. This will put the systems IP address in that box. Restart the Video Server and retry this test.
If that did not fix the issue, make sure that the Internet Information Services are running.
How do I configure the Web Client for heavy remote access?By utilizing Microsoft Internet Information Server, multiple Video Insight Servers can be supported from one IIS server. There is no additional setup. Simply add your additional server as described in the Server User Manual and you will see the second server in the left navigation tree. You can use IIS Load Balancing to serve additional remote users. You will need to change the security settings on the web browser to accept cookies if you are using XP with Service Pack 2.
How do I change the default port 80?If your ISP has blocked access to port 80, you can change the port by going into the Control Panels/Administrative Tools/Internet Information Services. Go to the properties tab and change the port address to an open port. After restarting, you will need to access your Video Insight web client as follows:
http://x.x.x.x:400/videoinsight (assuming you have changed the port to 400)
Why do I see text on the page instead of video when I open the Web Client? This happens when .net was loaded after the Video Insight Web Client was loaded. From the control panel, unload Microsoft .net and then reload it from the Video Insight CD.
Why do I see the left tree navigation, but no live video?Verify that the IP address in the Video Server Setup page is the IP address assigned to the system.
Why do I see red text when trying to bring up the Web Client?Ensure that the ASP.NET user has not been deleted from the Windows users on the local PC. You can verify this by using the Control Panel/Users and Groups. If the user has been deleted, uninstall and reload Microsoft.net.
I am using Windows 2003 Server and my web client does not work?Load ASP.net with Add/Remove Programs , Add Windows Components section.
When trying to view recorded video, why does the left navigation tree have only files and no camera names? This happens when you change the default IIS subdirectory from \\inetpub\wwwroot to something else or you change the default location of the web server files from \\inetpub\wwwroot\videoinsight or you have changed the default location of the video insight web client files.
How do I upgrade the server from previous versions? If you find that there are problems with the web client, then the .net cache may need to be cleared. It is located in C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files/VideoInsight. Simply delete the Video Insight folder and it should resolve the issue.
Why do I get the message "Server Error in '/VideoInsight' Application. Thread was being aborted"?The .net cache may needs to be cleared. It is located in C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files/VideoInsight. Simply delete the Video Insight folder.
Why do I get the message "Server Application not Available"?Uninstall Microsoft.net framework with Add/Remove and then reinstall.
Why am I having trouble playing recorded video? If you are able to view live video with the the web client, but are having trouble with recorded video, uninstall the web client using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and then re-install the Web Client from the WebSetup subdirectory of the Video Insight CD.
Why do I get the message "language = vb.net"?From the control panel/add remove programs, remove Microsoft.Net Framework 1.1. Using Windows Explorer, browse our CD for the Video Insight subdirectory. Double click on the file "Dotnetfx.exe" to reload .Net. Restart the server.
Can I install the Web Client on XP Home?Video Insight needs Microsoft Internet Information Server which is not included with Windows XP Home. You can still use the Video Insight software, you just cannot access the server from a web client.
